Statement From NYSDOT Region 8 Acting Director Jim Rusak

On Sunday evening, the New York State Department of Transportation was alerted to a potentially hazardous situation that had developed along the Saw Mill River Parkway at Exit 13 (Farragut Avenue). Working with local law enforcement, NYSDOT immediately closed the roadway and mobilized our maintenance forces to address the situation, which involved the collapse of a portion of the roadway. Working through the night, our crews and contractors were able to open the northbound lanes in time for the morning commute and we expect to reopen the southbound lanes later this evening.

While our investigation is ongoing, it appears this situation resulted from the deterioration of a 12” drainage pipe underneath the roadway. The deterioration was exacerbated by this weekend’s heavy rainfall.

The average annual daily traffic for the Saw Mill River Parkway at Farragut Avenue is 47,000 vehicles. NYSDOT crews will be on site until the job is complete and we appreciate the public’s patience as we work to reopen this vital commuter artery as quickly as possible.
