Sheriff's Office Investigating Child Fatality Following Drowning Incident in the Town of Hartford

According to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, the Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a child following an incident that occurred on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at approximately 3:19 p.m. at a residence on State Route 40 in the Town of Hartford.

First responders were notified of a child who was unresponsive following a drowning at the residence. Life-saving efforts were performed at the scene. The child was transported to Glens Falls Hospital, where the child was pronounced deceased.

An autopsy was performed at Glens Falls Hospital on August 13, 2026. The results of the autopsy indicate that the cause of death was drowning. The investigation is ongoing. The identity of the child is not being released at this time.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, Hartford Fire Department, Argyle EMS, and Washington County Child Protective Services.
