Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation Hosts Summer Carnival for Residents, Families
MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y., August 17, 2026 — The Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation (CNR) held its annual summer carnival, providing outdoor fun and entertainment for residents and their families. The much-anticipated event is a highlight of the year for the entire CNR community bringing various carnival games and activities, a petting zoo, and live music for everyone’s enjoyment.
“It’s all about finding ways to get to know our residents and make sure they’re staying engaged and getting to live life to the fullest,” said Peter Donlon, CNR’s director of leisure time activities. The carnival requires extensive, intentional planning to ensure an engaging event in a safe environment for residents with varying needs, and Donlon said the result is well worth the effort.
“It can feel isolating as a resident at times so this is a reminder that they are part of the greater community in Livingston County,” said Donlon.
Staff from across the center facilitate the carnival by escorting residents, serving meals, and providing for any necessary care, but it would not be possible without the community’s volunteer support.
“There’s great anticipation for this event from residents, staff, and families,” said Samontra Spencer, CNR’s director of long-term care. “Our families especially show up and support; they really go above and beyond for us.”
Spencer explained that volunteers participate in these and other events for many reasons. Some currently have or have had family members in care and believe they are investing in the health of a facility they very well might need one day. Still, others are former staff who choose to stay connected to CNR’s work.
“People who have had exposure here just keep coming back because they love being a part of it so much,” said Spencer.
The effort means the world to residents like Samual Salvatore, a life-long Mount Morris native who took in the festivities with family members, playing games, chatting with friends, and listening to live music, “I think it’s great. It shows an appreciation for us as part of the community and that people still think of us.”
While coordinating the carnival is a massive undertaking, Donlon said being involved is incredibly rewarding, “I cannot describe what it’s like to give back to someone whether it’s a veteran or someone who has just lived here and raised a family. Now they need a little extra help during the day, and we’re able to provide it.”
