New York State Department of Transportation Announces Public Auction of Surplus Land in Albany and Rensselaer Counties on September 18

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) today announced it will host a public auction for three parcels of surplus property located in Albany and Rensselaer counties on Friday, September 18, at 11 a.m. The auction is part of the state’s ongoing Surplus Property Program, which identifies and auctions off state-owned land, originally acquired for highway enhancements, that is no longer required for transportation purposes. By auctioning these parcels, NYSDOT aims to return the properties to local tax rolls and foster opportunities for local development.

The public auction will be held at the NYSDOT Main Office, located at 50 Wolf Road, Albany. Check-in begins at 10:45 a.m. All bidders must pre-register by 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 17.

The parcels scheduled for public auction include:

  • Town of East Greenbush (Rensselaer County): An approximately 12,441 square-foot parcel adjacent to the north end of 271 Columbia Turnpike (U.S. Route 9 & 20). Bidding will commence at $26,000.
  • Town of East Greenbush (Rensselaer County): An approximately 5.3-acre parcel located near the eastbound Interstate 90 Exit 8 ramp, situated between Partition Street Extension and Woodlawn Avenue. Bidding will commence at $49,800.
  • City of Cohoes (Albany County): An approximately 3,010 square-foot parcel located at the eastern terminus of South Street, adjacent to State Route 787. Bidding will commence at $8,700.

Detailed property information, bidding forms, and official terms and conditions are available in the auction brochure, which can be accessed online at www.dot.ny.gov/r1surplus. Prospective bidders may also request bid forms by contacting the NYSDOT Regional Right-of-Way Office at (518) 457-9178 or via email at dot.sm.r1.orow.propertymgmt@dot.ny.gov. Please note that all visitors to the NYSDOT Main Office must present valid photo identification upon entry.

All properties are sold "as-is." NYSDOT strongly encourages prospective bidders to conduct thorough due diligence, including researching local municipal zoning requirements and land-use regulations, prior to submitting bids.
