Even though Wednesday’s $847 million Powerball jackpot was won in New Jersey, ticket sales leading up to the drawing generated $38 million combined for New York’s public schools and Lottery retailers.  In addition, three $1 million Powerball Second Prizes were sold during the run at:

  • Tops Markets #227, 9660 Transit Rd, East Amherst
  • Kings 86 C-Store, 1420 86th Street, Brooklyn
  • Hannaford #8341, 3650 Route 9W Brdg View Plaza, Highland

Meanwhile, the Mega Millions and NY Lotto jackpots continue to grow to a combined $518 million as of November 5.

New York State Gaming Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer said, “It is rare to see jackpots of this caliber peaking at the same time, driving excitement and revenue to New York’s public schools. The results of these jackpot runs are evident: life-changing prizes for New Yorkers, critical revenue to small businesses across the state, and vital aid to our schools.”

The Powerball jackpot began rolling on August 12, resulting in 36 drawings until this week’s win. In New York State, Powerball ticket sales totaled $92.6 million during the run. All of New York’s profits from the sales are constitutionally dedicated to New York’s K-12 public schools, totaling $32.4 million during this jackpot. Commissions on ticket sales paid to retailers in that time frame across the state totaled $5.6 million.

While the Powerball jackpot has reset to $20 million, the Mega Millions jackpot began to roll on July 28 and currently stands at $505 million, and the in-state New York Lotto jackpot stands at $13.4 million since it was last hit June 13. The next Mega Millions drawing is Friday, November 6, followed by Powerball and New York Lotto drawings on Saturday, November 7.

The New York Lottery has contributed nearly $93.4 billion to public schools since its inception, making it the largest and most profitable Lottery in North America. All lottery profits in New York are constitutionally dedicated to supporting public education.
